[Sep. 10th, 2009|02:29 pm] |
This blog will no longer be updated as from today!
I've decided to be sensible and merge my two journals into one, my regular twinklestah journal, where my personal posts will be strictly FRIENDS ONLY and my art posts and stuff PUBLIC.
Please update your friend lists and add me THERE instead. It would mean a lot to me if you followed me on my move <3 I love hearing what you all have to think about what I do.
Thank you very much! See you on the other side! ;) |

| Of new characters + situations... |
[Aug. 11th, 2009|11:53 pm] |
I've not updated this blog for a while. Sorry about that. Most of you already know the big change in my personal life + will therefore, hopefully, understand why entries are a little sporadic and my recent work is a little...slapdash and everywhere.
However, I'm a firm believer in karma, and I also believe its helped me discover a new friend: my newest character, Dhani.
"...born from the swelling of a crescendo of music (typically the "musical orgasm" in 'A Day in the Life' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBJj10rYmdg&feature=PlayList&p=8E852F486CB68070&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=3 - though more the tuneful 'second' orgasm *L* after Paul McCartney's section..), this little creature speaks in song and notes... a musical muse & comfort to those who need him. Everywhere + nowhere and far from elusive once he's been discovered. (I think in my story he'll end up being found in a tree).
He has a sister, Soliloquy, who is a writing muse. She's been around a lot longer but I just cannot get her design down at all. She's got a mask too, but she's pink.
Another of the spirit things introduced himself to me today. His name is Dhani and he's associated with music. He's the sort of character my younger self would have probably loved to have but didn't really know how - music does mean a lot to me, it inspires me, and I guess some day I'll make it myself (I sing), yet I've never really had a character that has been able to represent that part of myself. I've tried + failed miserably many times in the past, they always came off a little...eh.
The plumed tail is inspired by certain birds of paradise."
( Further illustrations of Dhani )
He also has his own gallery on my flickr here, where you can read a little more about him, and see all the illustrations of him (eventually).
Finally: Thanks to everyone for their continued patience + kindness regarding recent events. <3 It's really appreciated. |

| What's this? |
[Jul. 29th, 2009|04:28 pm] |
...childrens book featuring short stories involving the cataroose, Tika-Tiri, Sambuca et al?
I say kids book, it'll be short stories of a somewhat quirky nature involving them and I guess kid friendly but all ages REALLY. I mean, is it really a children's book if it features a lion named after a strong alcoholic drink? :D
I have LOTS of ideas and I'm pretty pumped about this project, though for now I think it'll be strictly 'for fun'... maybe once I have a collection of stories (say over 10) going, I'll think about collecting them into books + zines.
OF WHICH: Zine featuring all of my characters coming SOON SOON. I'm very excited about *that*, too, but details are supersekret right now...
:D |

| The origins of Tika-Tiri... |
[Jul. 29th, 2009|01:38 am] |
I actually "woke myself up" to sift through a book, find this page, take a photo of it and put it online.
For those of you who were curious as to where Tika-Tiri came from. I think she'd be pretty pleased to learn she was inspired by a bagpipe.
I think what happened...I had the basic concept for Tika in my head, and the fact that she had to be a four-legged creature, and green (though she was darker green back then), and forgot about her. Then I read this book and that name was perfect somehow.
I added an 'a' somewhere along the way and the rest is, uh, history?

| The artist drawing the art... |
[Jul. 22nd, 2009|03:27 am] |
I recently had a night of full-on SKETCHING. Soon after that, a night of full-on PAINTING and finishing up these sketches.
I can't wait to do that again soon :) There is nothing more theraputic than just sitting down with trashy TV on and swirling around watercolours...!
Here's some of the ones I got finished:
for Xander :) As you might already know, she and I have this perpetual art trade going on, and this is one of my contributions to it :) She wanted her character, Xander...drawing Xander! I tried to mimic her signature style - hope it looks half-decent at least! I'm not a very good art parrot. :( I do love how this turned out, though. Probably one of my better designed pieces! More like this?
"Mouse Scholar" Inspired by a stain seen on a wall! It really did look like a tall, long mouse-like figure whose tail was somewhat a scarf/chain/however you see it to a smaller mouse-like figure! Somehow it became this. A bit of inspiration from Alice in Wonderland (though more so the Disney interpretation than the book itself, I think.) Little mouse wonders why the big mouse's book has no pictures, perhaps. :)
More illustrative spam to come soon! |

| Words! |
[Jul. 14th, 2009|07:01 pm] |
Well, I'm in a lot of pain and generally feeling quite weak and awful right now thanks to getting my wisdom tooth extracted on Monday.
This adorable drawing Wolfy T made me helped, but look! That's generally how I'm feeling! Pathetic, no? :)
So, here's a meme, to try and ignore the pain in my melon-face: Reply to this meme by yelling "words!", and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you. Keep in mind that if I don't know you that well, your words might end up kind of esoteric/oblique.
dumpysaurus provided me with these words:
Wolves -Jenny (the Dumpy) is talking about my "Wolf Paintings", or at least, I'd be surprised if she wasn't as wolves are otherwise nothing to do with me! :D The three-headed wolfbeast came to me while listening to Kate Bush, in particular, 'Hounds of Love'. That might sound really ridiculous to some, but I really love that song, and find Kate's music very haunting and inspiring. Listen to some of it, you might get something from it too! Since drawing them for the first time in late 2006, the wolves, each head representing a different aspect of the personality, have flitted in and out of my artwork - usually being illustrated in a wispy, watercolour style. The freedom watercolour gives as a medium is very suited to the wolves + what they represent. This is probably the first and only time I've ever tried to "explain" them. I hope this is sufficient enough :D
Blue -Although I love all colours, blue and I go way back. Blue has always been "my" colour. My eyes are blue, if a little sad, washed out version of blue, and my personal characters have always had blue in them too. The very first, Cally Cat, was blue, and she still is in her current guise as the cataroose. Blue is also a colour very connected to Twinkle, another 'signature' character of mine + lead in my Indigo Sky novels. Blue lights have a calming effect on me too, post-secret.
Taxidermy -It amuses me that this word is one people think of when they think of me, but yeah, I guess I only have myself to blame for it :) I guess this stems from the cataroose - my persona, a character I draw a lot and use as a little blue representative - she's a stitched-together taxidermy monster, a cat with moose antlers, and a kangaroo's pouch. I also love real life taxidermy, though I've never attempted it and probably never will (the smell!). A museum in Amsterdam (the NEMO Science Centre) had a room of taxidermy + pickled creatures/fetuses, and I guess that helped rekindle a lost love. When I was a child, my dad took me to the museum in our city frequently, where there was once an exhibition all about taxidermy (featuring a stuffed lion, I remember him very vividly!). Even though at first visit it creeped me out, I think I went there every week until the exhibition closed. Recently, my boyfriend and I went to the same museum, which has since been modernised, and I found myself gleeing at all the taxidermy + drawers-of-insects and such there. It's a known fact that I'm a nut about wildlife, so seeing it up close, even if dead, is something I love. Also: yes, taxidermy does upset me sometimes. No, I'm not pro-hunting or animal cruelty.
Indigo -Another colour ;) I like the colour indigo. Colour therapists suggest that indigo relates to being faithful, self belief, being devoted, love, practical idealists (there's a paradox!)...so I guess those that know me very well would guess why I have a connection to the colour too. One site says this: Indigo relates to self responsibility, that is to say, being responsible for one's own life; responsibility to oneself to follow the soul's path and needs and trusting one's own intuition. The ability to see things from a 'higher' viewpoint rather than purely for satisfaction of the ego or one's material comfort. Intuitive messages are unique to you and are for your own personal growth and differ from the gut feelings. I've struggled with the age-old thing of "not being happy" and not feeling in control of my own life for far too long and it's only really recently I've decided to take the bull by the horns so to speak... so indigo, symbolically, is indeed an important colour for me. I also, like blue, find it calming. Of course, there's my novel, Indigo Sky, which also relates to a similar ideal. The lead character, Twinkle, is an indigo child, in a way (look it up!), and is also on a search, a self exploration...
Whimsical -I'm honoured Jenny chose this word to describe me! :D I like whimsical things. I'm a fan of colour, being expressive, playfulness, being childlike, embracing the small things in life. Again, this relates to what I was saying about 'indigo'. I love old cartoons, childrens books, animals, nature in general, swirls, seahorses... they're all pretty whimsical. I try my best to give my own creations, my art and stories, this quality. I want to try and create worlds that people can be lost in, and come out of again at the end, feeling happy. Escapism. Something like that. |

| Payday! :) |
[Jul. 10th, 2009|11:51 pm] |
I got home from work about 45 minutes ago. Overtime! Very sleepy and achy but satisfied.
As it was payday, I bought a few little things:
A diary (needed for work/uni/etc!), a folder to put beautiful gift art from wonderful friends in (with the animals on), a brown sketchbook + a SET OF DRAWING INKS!! to play with, pens for said inks and the BEST PEN EVER. Seahorse <3
Flowers <3 Bought from work for my mum (she's been helping me out a lot lately with stuff so she deserves them - she'd deserve them anyway) and some to take to my grandad's memorial :)
Must relax and wind down now. Juice, chicken caesar wrap (I like my work!) and a movie, I think! |

I've been playing around in Corel Painter a lot lately. No particular reason other than the fact that I never draw digital art anymore!
Here's what I've come up with:
'Dirty Diana' A picture of my character Violet (who is a purple panther!) inspired by the Michael Jackson song. I guess this is the closest thing to a tribute I'll draw. Obviously, among others, 'Dirty Diana' got played a lot recently and it's always been one of my favourite songs, so I guess I just let it roll with the inspiration! ;)
More musical inspiration. This time, I was listening to 'This Woman's Work #1', by Kate Bush, and this illustration of Twinkle ended up coming out. I feel I never draw Twinkle or anyone from Indigo Sky any more, which is a shame. So call this a rarity!
"May I prune your ears?" ...I'm not going to explain this one! A silly private joke between pandacat and I. Don't ask! |

| Lovely trinkets. |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|11:30 pm] |
I got home from work today to discover a package was waiting for me from the wonderful thrivis! If you're unfamiliar with her, you really must see her art - it's beautiful and very unique :)
This is the box of wonder that she sent me - look! So many amazing things I can't even begin to thank her enough! Tiger pen! :D I have a collection of novelty pens, so this is perfect! Beads! Papers! eek! I'm inspired to create but it's already too late in the day :(
A lovely purse + ox charm she got me from Chinese New Year celebrations. My sign is the ox :)
The amazingly detailed, intricate shrine. I can't get over how beautiful and personally symbolic this is. So inspiring, too. I want to make some. This is just wonderful <3
She also sent me a great selection of prints of her artwork AND two originals (the Phantom of the Opera piece & the dragon painting!) <3
I love these so much, I'll treasure everything she sent!
An "announcement" (though not really as I've been hinting at it anyway): Indigo Sky 2 will be written! More on this soon. Angel City hasn't been forgotten either, don't worry (if you were. haha).
Also, it goes without saying: The memorial service for Michael Jackson was beautiful. I feel for his family, especially his sweet children, so much. His daughter was so brave :) Rest in peace - as your brother said, hopefully now people will leave you alone. |

| "Life with the edge taken off." |
[Jul. 5th, 2009|12:00 am] |
Well, work finished earlier today, so I got home, had a nap and...decided to have an art day! And I managed to finish some commissions:
( More inside - with progress pictures! )
On another note: listening to Pulp makes me want to write the sequel to Indigo Sky because I was listening to them a LOT when writing the first novel. *giggle* I do actually have the plot fleshed out for book two, so maybe. I don't know. I'm a little disheartened because book one didn't go well and I haven't really promoted it well, but we'll see. Maybe I'll just write it for me :) |

| | joe henry - struck | ] | I'm so sorry everyone - I feel I never, ever post here anymore and I'm debating as to what to do with this journal, i.e: should I even keep this blog at all?
I like having twinklestah as my personal journal and this one for art as I don't want to spam everyone on my personal journal list with my art & story babbling if they are not interested, plus I do like having a place that's private. That said, my art and stories are very, VERY much a part of me, so keeping them seperate also feels a little weird - what to do?
I've been very busy with work lately and not a lot else, but when my regular hours kick in, I'm going to try and devote more time to my art and such. I've got a lot of projects I want to work on, including many zines and maybe some returns to my old writing worlds. Eh. That sounds pretentious! I don't mean for it to.
I hope all of you out there still enjoy reading this, at least :) When I do manage to post, that is! I'll also work on reading my flist here too. Again, not meaning to be mean or ignorant in any way.
Arg. *frets*
Goodnight, all! :D |

| The Great Big Disconnect |
[Jun. 30th, 2009|10:10 pm] |
Just a general update!
Commissions are coming. I've sketched them all out, but to be honest, I'm feeling rather low lately. I don't deal with certain things well and I'm very sensitive. I'm not going into reasons but it's one thing and a whole bunch of little other things that are things that I don't think I'll get over, but I'll stay safe in the knowledge that time is a great healer. (I typed "dealer" then. HA! Amused X))
What I'm trying to say is: please be patient with me? :) I don't mean to keep everyone waiting or come off all gloomy but I've hit a bit of a rock. I could really do with having a little break, maybe focussing on things that make me happy (re: my own characters for a while) so commissions are CLOSED for the time-being.
I'll open them again when I've sorted out some new little ideas I've got and when I'm generally feeling better!
Hope I've not bummed anybody out. Not my intention <3 Most of you will be at AC tomorrow, right? Eek! So excited for you! I'll make it to a con one day, I've decided. I demand pictures + stories!! <333
Take care all. xo |

There's nothing really there /yet/ except a boring introductory post. There isn't even a banner! I'll work on it. You all know that this is the real blog and has all the juicy crap from earlier this year when I was more enthusiastic ;)
Speaking of which: I'm running low on inspiration lately. It could be because I'm adjusting to my new routine/new job etc, and letting happy things like LIFE distract me ;) but still. I feel I'm neglecting this blog and I don't like letting things gather dust. It bothers me.
So... ♥ What would YOU like to see on my blog? ♥ More art posts? More about my stories? Photography? Let me know and I'll deliver the goods.
:) Have a great weekend, all. x |

| Here, there and everywhere else. |
[Jun. 18th, 2009|01:41 pm] |
I've not been posting much here, I know. I've just been so busy with work (which is so far, very fun :) great to have a routine again!) and trying to get a lot of other things 'sorted'. I'm pretty much all over the place in every way right now. I hope that calms down soon.
Otherwise: I'm taking commissions right now for stickers. 3 for $15.00 and they look like this:

And my Art Archive is steadily getting filled. It'll never be complete unfortunately because I have a tendency to lose my art, but it's full enough for you to see where I've come from, how I've changed, etc.
Oh - I played around with the colours + design on my blog here. Tell me what you think? PS: It's actually just one of Livejournal's own colourschemes, but...still, it's different, it's fun and I like it. :) |

| Your basic update + ooh, shiny. |
[Jun. 12th, 2009|11:16 pm] |
So, I'm really sleepy. I've just started a new job and internet has had to take a bit of a backseat. However, I'm more excited about my days off and dedicating real time to artwork and reading and movies and travel and FUN again, which is wonderful. More than that, the job has been really great so far, with really nice people and all is promising :)
In other news;
What's This? -After having a bit of an epiphany laaate the night before my first day at work (*L* pandacat can be my witness on this one, she got a rambly text about it!), I decided to re-house my old work (not all of it, unfortunately) on Flickr because, well, reasons are there. I'm going to take my time in updating it so that those who watch me there aren't bombarded (and also because I tend to be like a dog in a fight with projects and end up holding onto them until they frustrate me so much so I never want anything to do with them again!!) but yeah, there you go. I hope some of you get some enjoyment out of it!
Hope everyone has been well and has a nice weekend ahead of them. :) |
